Unusual Near-Horizon Cosmic-Ray-like Events Observed by ANITA-IV
نویسندگان
چکیده
ANITA's fourth long-duration balloon flight in late 2016 detected 29 cosmic-ray (CR)-like events on a background of $0.37^{+0.27}_{-0.17}$ anthropogenic events. CRs are mainly seen reflection off the Antarctic ice sheets, creating characteristic phase-inverted waveform polarity. However, four below-horizon CR-like show anomalous non-inverted polarity, $p = 5.3 \times 10^{-4}$ chance if due to background. All from locations near horizon; ANITA-IV observed no steeply-upcoming similar two such prior flights.

Particle production in very-high-energy cosmic-ray emulsion chamber events: Usual and unusual events.
We show that a simple scaling model of very forward particle production, consistent with accelerator and air shower data, can describe all features of the very high-energy interactions recorded with emulsion chambers. This is somewhat surprising after numerous claims that the same data implied large scaling violations or new dynamics. Interestingly, we cannot describe some of the Centauro event...
متن کاملSpectrum of Cosmic X-ray Background Observed by Rxte/pca
We have anaylzed a large set of RXTE/PCA scanning and slewing observations performed between April 1996 and March 1999. We obtained the 3-20 keV spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) by subtracting Earth-occulted observations from observations of the X-ray sky at high galactic latitude and far away from sources. The sky coverage is approximately ∼ 22.6 · 10 3 deg 2. The PCA spectrum of ...
متن کاملDetailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays
In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...
متن کاملUnusual heavy ion injection events observed by Freja
Heavy ion injection events (registered in the C+/N+/O+ mass channel) into the ionosphere at 1700 km height are surveyed using the Swedish-German Freja satellite data. Heavy ion injections from the inner magnetosphere are mostly found in the nightside sector with a few exceptions that occur on the dayside. We report on these exceptional cases, particularly two specific events which seem to have ...
متن کاملTime Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
